Local Surgeon Presents at International Medical Conference in San Fransisco

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 16, 2007) A Fort Myers-based physician, experienced in performing laser vision correction, cataract surgery and in the treatment of corneal diseases, was a featured presenter at the annual conference of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) in San Diego.

Rick Palmon, M.D., a board-certified ophthalmologist and medical director of Southwest Florida Eye Care made three separate presentations on corneal surgery and laser vision correction and served as moderator of a panel of experts discussing the treatment of cataracts during a day-long seminar focusing on the cornea.

Palmon presented a seminar entitled “Management of Herpes Simplex Keratitis. New Advances.” Herpes simplex keratitis is a fairly common viral infection in the cornea that in severe, recurrent cases can lead to significant visual impairment. The cornea is the clear tissue which covers the eye. Other presentations included “Laser Vision Correction for Astigmatism” and “Keratorefractive: Cornea Metrics”

Dr. Palmon serves on the ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee and moderated Cornea Day 2007, a prestigious assignment for ophthalmologists considered expert in specialized areas.

The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery is an international educational and scientific organization with 9,100 member ophthalmologists who specialize in cataract and refractive surgery. The mission of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery is to raise the standards and skills of anterior segment surgeons through clinical and practice management education and to work with patients, government and the medical community to promote delivery of quality eye care.

The annual ASCRS conference is a five-day symposium held each spring. Current information and research into all areas of anterior segment and refractive surgery is presented. In addition to lectures, panels, and seminars for the ophthalmic surgeon, courses for ophthalmic nurses, technicians and administrators are offered.

The office of Southwest Florida Eye Care is a full-service eye care medical practice specializing in cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment and refractive surgery to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Comprehensive eye exams for all ages are offered. Offices are located in Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Naples.

Dr. Palmon received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed an internship at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, a residency at Wills Eye Hospital and a Fellowship at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Palmon is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
