FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 19, 2004) – Rick Palmon, M.D., a board-certified ophthalmologist and medical director of Southwest Florida Eye Care was recently a featured presenter at the annual conference of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in San Diego.

A symposium presentation entitled, “Pearls in Medical and Surgical Management of Corneal Disease” outlined best practices in the treatment of disease of the cornea, including corneal transplantation surgery. The cornea is the clear tissue which covers the eye.

Corneal transplants are very common in the United States; about 40,000 are performed each year. The chances of success of this operation have risen dramatically because of technological advances, such as less irritating sutures, or threads, which are often finer than a human hair; and the surgical microscope. Corneal transplantation has restored sight to many, who a generation ago would have been blinded permanently by corneal injury, infection, or inherited corneal disease or degeneration.

PALMON/ASCRS PRESENTATION Dr. Palmon also presented two papers at the conference entitled “Results of the ASCRS Corneal Clinical Committee Mitomycin-C Surgery” and “Refractive Shift After Acute Autoimmune Scleritis” and was the moderator of a panel of experts discussing Corneal Keratoplasty.

The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery is an international educational and scientific organization with 9,100 member ophthalmologists who specialize in cataract and refractive surgery. The mission of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery is to raise the standards and skills of anterior segment surgeons through clinical and practice management education and to work with patients, government and the medical community to promote delivery of quality eye care.

The annual ASCRS conference is a five-day symposium held each spring. Current information and research into all areas of anterior segment and refractive surgery is presented. In addition to lectures, panels, and seminars for the ophthalmic surgeon, courses for ophthalmic nurses, technicians and administrators are offered.

The office of Southwest Florida Eye Care is a full-service eye care medical practice specializing in cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment and refractive surgery to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Comprehensive eye exams for all ages are offered.

Dr. Palmon received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed an internship at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, a residency at Wills Eye Hospital and a Fellowship at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Palmon is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
